I am Kathryn DeSinaasappelen, and I am a self-proclaimed beer mistress. My enthusiasm in beer has introduced me to the world of Beer. In my research, I have discovered that women are not well represented, and stereotypes of women and beer still exist today.
I recently attend a beer tasting dedicated to beer brewed by women. So I wanted to share a little bit about the Amazing women behind the beers.
Anne-Francoise Pypaert
She was the first Trappist Brewmaster at Orval Brewery.
She was first hired in 1992. She studied biochemistry at Meurice in Brussels
Sadly she said her goodbyes to the company, and rumor has it, she plans on launching her own brewery.
An De Ryck
She is the first female brewing engineer in Beglium. She graduated from Kaho Sint-Lieven University in Ghent. She studied biochemistry, chemistry, and microbiology. She is from a Brewing Family and took over the family business after graduating. Under her care it went from a local run endeavor to an international brand. She has created 6 new flavors, many of which have won awards.
She is also part of projects analyzing the rate of beer going stale, and flavor stability.
Rosa Merckx
She started working at Liefmans Brewery as a secretary. She was closely involved in the running of operations, however she eventually rose in ranks and became the companies first female brew-master.
She created their Kriek. The company now uses her image and signature in honor of her legacy.
Anna Coletta Wauman
She turned an oil factory into a brewery in 1875 and became a brew-master. Her brewery was operational until WW2 when the German occupation confiscated the brew kettles.
Anne-Catherine Dilwyns
She is the great granddaughter of Anna Coletta Wauman, and she is impressive in her own right. She started her own brewing company Dilwyns brewery when she was just 25 years old.
Hildegard Von Ostaden
She is a microbrewer who laughed a series of beers called Urthel. They were later bought by the La Tappe Brewery.
Now she creates beers exclusively for her restaurant De Hoppeschuur in Knesseclare.
