It was just last month that I was speaking with Cariad about negative comments. We were talking about YouTube and at the time I hadn’t received any. In fact the worst things was the 4 thumbs down I had received. Boy has that changed this past month.
This video has been getting a lot of attention
I am so happy that this video is doing well. There have been people who went through something similar and have even reached out to talk to me. That’s wonderful. I’ve received words of encouragement and a lot of support.
However I’ve also gotten an overwhelming amount of crap. It’s easy to say “don’t let if get to you”, but that is easier said than done. I would be lying if I said none of the negative comments upset me.
For me personally I am more frustrated than sad, because a lot of the negative comments have NOTHING to do with my video.
I have people explaining how my year in France really happened, as if I wasn’t there.
Some insult my looks, which I will admit are my favorite, because my channel isn’t a dating profile. I have a guy. He thought I was hot enough to put a ring on it, sooo yeah.
There are people who say thing without doing looking at anything else on my channel. Seriously reading my about me section renders most comments moot.
Most of the time the stupidity of the comments have me laughing in stitches. While some sting, I am grateful that those comments are being said to me. I’ve seen and read so many stories where people are bombarded with hateful comments, and become so overwhelmed they take their life.
If my getting a few idiots in my comment section means someone else will be spared that, then I am happy! However if you are receiving them and need help dealing with it, then here is my advice.
1. Your Platform Belongs To You
The way you choose to run your platform is your business, and the way you do it is right. This is how I choose to run mine which might be helpful to you.
My platform is about MY values and MY goals and it is not a democracy. No one has to like it. There are many channels out there to choose from. However anyone who comes to my channel and want to be part of my community will be subject to what I decide to do.
2. Focus On Positive Feed Back
I love making videos, and writing blogs, but honestly it’s the connect to other people that make it worth while. You choose to whom you give a voice to. Don’t let it be the toxic people who are trying to get a reaction from you. Let the people, who add to the conversation, who are positive, or who give encouragement, be heard.
3. Report and Ban!
I am a report and ban happy person. Someone wants to say some garbage to me, that is great. Believe me I get great satisfaction reporting the comment, deleting the comment, and banning the user.
There is a saying my grandfather use to say, “If you associate with people who you feel do bad things, then you are alright with the bad things that they do”
If someone can’t respect me, I know they won’t respect others. I don’t want they type of person in my comment section, let alone in my circle of friends.
R E S P E C T, find out what it means to me! It means a lot.
4. Talk To Your Support System
The worse part of negative comments is that it hurts the people around you as well. My mom, husband, and family watch my videos. They are disgusted by the things some people choose to say to me. It may not seem like much, but having the people that matter much comfort you can go a long way.
5. You are NOT alone!
Sadly being online means that you will have to deal with garbage people. I am sorry for that. I’m also sorry if you are going through it right now.
You ARE a STRONG, WONDERFUL, INTELLIGENT, KIND, and BEAUTIFUL person. Anyone who would say otherwise isn’t worth the time of day.
