I’ve gotten in the habit of always checking out the beer section when ever I go to the store just to see if anything jumps out of me. This particular beer caught my attention .
- It is a Flanders Red Ale
- It’s brewed in Roeselare
Flanders Red Ale
This is a style of sour ale that is brew exclusively in West Flanders. (That is where I live!) This particular beer is top fermented, and then left to ferment for 2 years in an oak cask. They use malt, and as a result these beers are considered wine like of beer.
West Flanders
Roeselare is a small town that is right next door to me. (40 min away). Always have to support local industry!

Let’s Try the Beer

Color
It looks like soda, and it very hard to get the head, despite there being a lot of carbonation
Smell
There wasn’t an overwhelming scent. It smelled earthy and dark to me.
Taste
Going into this beer I thought there would be more of a fruit taste. I was surprised that it didn’t taste like fruit or sweet.
The beer reminded of a dark hearty bread. Pumpernickel came to mind while I drank it. The tasty is earthy, but not bitter. It ends on a sour note, that’s like vinegar. It’s a refreshing light beer, that reminded me of ice tea.
Overall
This beer comes in at 5.2%. It was very enjoyable. My expectations were high going into it, and even though they weren’t met, I wasn’t disappointed.
Rating
5/5 Stars.

“This beer comes in at 5.2%.”
My first reaction was that’s a very low — and oddly precise — score.
