YouTube Partnership Real Talk

I’ve been a YouTube spectator since 2006. I remember YouTube before it had advertisement. I remember YouTube when it was considered a faux pas to have a sponsor because you were a sellout.

I’ve seen a lot of people condemn YouTube because they feel the new partnership program goes against the “broadcast yourself” motto. Some Bigger channels are saying this as well. My reaction is a face palm and eye roll.

I can’t speak for others and what they think YouTube is, however when it started, there wasn’t an option to make money. In fact, it was in the realm of time wasting.  (Oh, how the internet has changed!)

The new objectives of being able to get paid doesn’t change the overall YouTube motto. There isn’t anything stopping anyone from getting in front of a camera and uploading it up on YouTube! You can still broadcast yourself, and still build a community.

However, if you want to be a Youtuber, and make a living from it, then you need to accept the reality that this is a career choice.

If you go into it thinking

  • It’s going to be so easy
  • I’ll just upload a video and become massively popular over night
  • It’s gonna rain money $$$$

You’re going to be disappointed. None of that is going to happen. The journey is long and tedious!

The video you see on YouTube is the end product.  You don’t see the time spent brainstorming, writing a script, set up, shooting, editing, making thumbnails, creating tags, writing a description, promoting a video, updating, relaunching video, and the list can go on and on.

That 5-min video has days of work that you will never see. That is the grind. If you want to be successful, you do that, again and again. It never stops. While you are doing that, you’re also going to have to actively look for opportunities, think of ways to innovate your channel, interact with the community, and the list goes on and on.

It doesn’t matter what platform you’re on, AdSense is not a reliable income source.

If you want to make a living online “multiple income streams” should be your motto.  Look at all the big youtubers/blogger/entrepreneurs/etc , they aren’t relying on AdSense. They have kickstart, patreon, merchandise, products, sponsors, brand deals, other projects, and the list goes on and on.

I think the days of people making a passive income on YouTube without putting effort into it are over. I think that is a good move.

If you want to broadcast yourself, then do it! If you want to make a career of YouTube, then do it!  Get in front of the camera and just see what happens.  You never know, you might find you don’t even like it.  However, if you do, and want to pursue it, then you need to know, it’s just like every other job. It requires hard work and dedication.

Personal Side Note:

The amount of people who are complaining about this frustrates me, especially when you look at their channels.  I’m not a big youtuber, but I know what engages me to hit that subscribe button and what doesn’t.

Here are some problems I’ve come across while stalking channels.

  • Tabs disabled on look up.
  • Home page is bare.
  • Blank about me page.
  • Inconsistent uploads.
  • No respond to comments.
  • No online presents outside of YouTube.
  • No schedule.
  • Not sure what the channel is about.

These are small thing that are easily fixed, and can do a lot to build and grow your channel.

I believe that youtube is a community. I will support you, and you will support me. Together we will get to that finish line.

I will gladly cheer and encourage people on this journey and I might even do a Samwise and carry you a part of the way, but you have to be present, you have to try, and you have to put in effort to succeed.  (I’m not caring you the whole way.)
See you at the finish line!
