All About NaNoWrimo

There are a lot of question floating around the internet about NaNoWriMo. So here are my answers to your questions weather you asked them or not.

What is nanowrimo?

If you have heard of it, NaNoWriMo is the shorten verions of National Novel Writing Month. It is an Annual internet based writing competion that takes place in November. It is also a non-profit that raises money for creative writing.

Is Nano worth it?

No, it isn’t and Yes it is! The question you should be asking is: What am I looking for?

The Nano site offers great tools to track and show your progress. It is very useful, motivating, and convenient.  However, you could easily track them on your phone, computer, or in a notebook.

The site has a great forum which offers advice if you get stuck, and a welcoming and supportive community.  The community also carries over onto other platforms such as Youtube, and twitter. However if you don’t participate then the community isn’t helpful.

Can I win?

You have a 100% and 0% chance of winning. The fact is while NaNoWriMo is great it isn’t a magical solution. The book is not going to write itself. If you don’t make the time to write then you won’t have a book and you win. If you make the effort then you will win.

What did you learn?

I didn’t really learn anything that I didn’t know already. Writing is hard and sometime it impossible. However it is also fulfilling, easy, and wonderful.

What is it like?

Nano is the greatest. The part that I love and found useful was the community.

They are nice, thoughtful, and most encouraging bunch I’ve ever encountered on the internet.

There were many times where I wasn’t motivated or discouraged. There was always someone there to tell me to get back to work, and remind me that I wasn’t a horrible writer. Their support really helped me to accomplish my goal.

My recommendation:

If you are on the fence about participating I would encourage that you try it out, just to see if it is something that might work for you.

If you feel that Nano itself might be to much for you to handle, you could also tryout Camp Nano in April and July. You can set your own goal and objective.

I hope to see you there writers!
